Since some of my life is spent adventuring through the trails, forests, and quiet corners of the Midwest, I thought I’d share some of my go-to hiking essentials. Being out in nature—whether it's a spontaneous hike or a well-planned trek—has become more than just a pastime for me. It’s where I reconnect, reflect, and feel most grounded. Over the years, I’ve learned what truly makes a hike comfortable, safe, and enjoyable, and I hope these tips help you feel more prepared and inspired for your own journey into the wild
EMERGENCY SHELTER – Tarp, tent, space blanket,
FIRST-AID SUPPLIES – First Aid Kit
FIRE – Matches, lighter, and fire starters
ILLUMINATION – Flashlight, lanterns
INSULATION – gloves, hat, jacket, rain shell, thermals
NAVIGATION – compass, and GPS, map
NUTRITION - Food- Salty snacks (e.g. trail mix, nuts, and granola bars)
REPAIR KIT AND TOOLS – Duct tape, knife, screwdriver, and scissors
SUN PROTECTION – Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat

Elevation- uphill vs downhill or mixed.
Terrain, flat, forested, rolling, lots of roots snaking across path, lots of switch backs
Where water is along the trail.
