There are moments that stay with you long after they're over, and watching Big Boy 4014 rolling through New Haven, Indiana, was one of those moments for me. It was a bit of a wait - so it's best to skip forward to about 1.24 in this video. As you can see, long before the whistle echoed across town, people had already gathered along the tracks. Families unfolded lawn chairs, photographers adjusted their cameras, and we eagerly searched down the rails, hoping to be the first to spot the giant locomotive. There was a feeling of excitement in the air that was impossible to miss. Complete strangers smiled at one another, counting down the minutes until history came rumbling into view.
