Bird Food

This morning I heard the song of the sparrows. They didn't seem to be disturbed  by our 15 degree weather. Instead, they fluttered about in our forsythia. I watched as they preened themselves while happily chattering to one another.

The House Sparrow is the most familiar wild bird around our area. House Sparrows eat mostly grains, seeds and livestock feed. They also eat  corn, oats and wheat

In the winter wild birds often search bird feeders for seed.  I always place suet blocks outside so the wild-birds will have something to  feast on.

Suet is a great source of oil, fat, and calories. It offers birds much needed energy for generating the body heat in the cold winter months. You can purchase suet blocks ready-made. But it's also easy to make suet- blocks, balls or cakes at home.  You would want to use a combination of equal parts of fat or peanut butter and an assortment of birdseed.

When you are done mixing, place the mixture in a small container or roll in a ball to freeze and when it has hardened pop it out and place it in a  sturdy mesh bag or wire suet cage.

The birds will appreciate the treat.
