Garden Journal

I'm home, wrapped in the throw and keeping warm with a hot cup of coffee. Our garden is covered in snow and it' s a cool -8 here with a windchill of -26.

I've been working on this blog and jotting down some garden information for 2015.

Have a beautiful day, Lori

Below are some of my journal entries from April 2014 and updated photos.

4/2/2014  We have some daffodils and a tulip coming up on the east side of the house. And I saw some daffodils out back but they are not close to blooming. I looked closely at the forsythia yesterday and there are very small buds on it this year and they do not even look close to blooming.

 Tulips

4/7/2014 Placed order with bulb company. Hopefully, the plants will arrive soon so I can get them potted and labeled.

4/13/2014 I got up a while ago dug out the hosta bed more and created a trench/ edge and used that dirt to fill in the hole in the Hosta bed where we'd tried placing the pond the previous year and decided against it as there were too many tree roots there. I have the soil busted up pretty fine and  think the hosta can still grow up through it. I dug out a few lilies up against the east side garage too. I received another updated confirmation that states my plants are scheduled to arrive Tuesday - Friday of this week so I hope I am able to make some progress with the beds soon. I started expanding the west side bed and got about 2-3 feet and decided to take a break as my wheel barrel is now filled with the top layer of grass and I seemed to have /hit a root that may take some more energy than I have right now to dig out.

4/14/2014 Snow is falling. YUCK!

4/15/2014 Prior to the snow falling yesterday, I was looking at the hosta bed and was thinking that the trench I made in front to keep grass out and to cover the low lying spot now looks weird. I must have set it out too far or made it to uneven. I will have to rework it when the ground warms. In looking at trees, I've decided on a fruit-bearing tree and got the Au Rosa plum not only for the flowering but I also love the trunk and the idea of fruit.  AU-Rosa is a plum cultivar. It's supposed to produce large fruit with amber flesh, and a big flavor that ripens in June. I'm hopeful it will thrive and then we might see fruit in the next 3 years. If not, I'll be content with the pretty white blooms and I may not have to whitewash the trunk as its a hybrid...I'm still checking into that though. I'm informed that the tree is designed to withstand cold temperatures. It's supposed to grow well in Ohio to -30.

4/17/14  Received my mail order plants and got them all potted, labeled and watered in today. They are in the greenhouse on porch until it is warm enough for them to go out. Many of our plants are looking good this spring and it appears some of them have spread so I may do some transplanting when it's warm enough. We have that box of hummingbird flower seed that I need to scatter this year too. I will need to get busy pulling out more ditch lilies and the lemon balm has made an appearance again so will need to work on that too.

Garden in bloom in May

Just saw on channel 4 that they are warning people to stay away from Hog Weed that it is on the rise in Michigan and looks like they are taking hazmat teams in to cut the plants down as if you touch or your pet touches it ..it can causes blindness and at the very least blisters that feel like you have been burned.

4/22/14 Plants on porch are watered and are sti.ll looking good. Hope it warms up soon so I can plant them out.

4/28/14 We went to Big Lots and purchased a Concord Grape plant. Now where to  place it? We were thinking either where the one climbing rose was or along the E. side of  the garage? I read it should be protected from wind and get a decent amount of sun so either location should be ok. It's currently about 2-3 foot tall and is leafing out and has small clusters of fruit on it. I have lettuce coming up from seed.We got some bamboo stakes and green wire to create a bean ring or trellis too.
