Chives, Allium schoenoprasum

The chives we have in the window are the garlic flavored ones. They are super easy to grow in containers and are great for window ledges.

I use chives in potatoes, soups, salads and as a flavoring for all our meats.

We grow both the onion and the garlic flavored chives in the herb garden and in our flower beds. They reseed themselves and have the prettiest purple flower heads. We also grow oregano, thyme, cilantro, rosemary and lemon balm.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a member of the mint/Lamiaceae family. It's a lemon-scented herb known for its calming and anti-inflammatory effects and used since ancient times. It smells citrusy and can be found in applications, including culinary dishes,  jams/jellies, liqueurs, perfumes and teas I planted the serrated heart-shaped leafed plant years ago and it quickly grew to take over a flower bed so I dug a lot of it up and gave it to family and friends.

For Valentine's day,  I received one of those small walk-in greenhouses. I'm looking forward to setting it up in a few months when the weather conditions improve. In addition, I received some seed packets which I can start early.

February has been a  very busy month and we're anxiously awaiting spring. In the meantime, I'm enjoying watching videos on edible gardening and homegrown produce.

Here's my review on the book Kitchen Herbs.
