Here in Ohio, the Arctic blast is creating blowing snow and wind chills to - 30. It's days like this that make me thankful for the sunlight streaming in the window. And as I look outside, I think of our winter birds. Snow and winter wind chills sap energy and warmth from birds which can be fatal if birds don't have protection.
Provide Winter Bird Shelters
Evergreen Landscaping
Planting evergreens is a great cover and a natural way to provide birds with shelter.
Birdhouse or Roosting Box
Even on the starkest, coldest days, a birdhouse or roosting box will provide some shelter for birds and is better than no shelter at all.
Thickets
The interior branches of bushes such as this Forsythia will provide a windbreak which will provide minimal shelter for birds.

Hang stuffing materials
Cotton, Yarn, Pet Fur, Hay, Batting can be used by birds to stuff in tree crevices and holes.
Taking any of these easy steps will help provide winter birds with shelter.
Happy Birding, Lori
