A garden pond is an excellent addition to the garden whether you build it yourself or get help from friends or neighbors. And garden ponds are not only relaxing they are a magnet for attracting wild life.
Our first water garden was created from a container. At that time we wanted to attract wildlife and appreciated the sound of the water spraying from a fountain that was located in the middle of the container.
A few years passed and we purchased a preformed pond and waterfall while at a nearby garage sale.
We dug in the pond and waterfall and surrounded it with few rocks and plants and added landscape lights, mulch, tall grasses, and lilies. Later that spring, we added some water plants and 3 goldfish to the pond.
The goldfish quickly grew that summer. And prior to winter, they relocated to an aquarium inside our house.
There are still snails, frogs, squirrels, birds, bunnies and dragonflies that come to frequent our pond.
A few years back we expanded our water garden to include 2 small ponds.
To easily install a preformed pond and waterfall
Place the pond right-side-up where you plan to install it.
Trace the edge of the pond with spray paint.
Dig the hole inside the traced edge that is about 3-5 inches deeper than the measured depth of the preformed pond.
Fill the bottom of the hole with play sand to make a level base for the pond to rest on.
Place the pond in the hole- level it and then begin filling with water.
Backfill around the edges of the pond and continue filling the pond as you add dirt.
Install Waterfall
Place the preformed water fall so it rests over pond edge. Pile up dirt so waterfall rests on top.
Run section of garden hose from pump up through top of waterfall and hide with rocks or plants.
The force of water being pumped will cascade down the waterfall - spilling into the pond.
Sit back and enjoy your pond while watching all the wildlife that comes to visit. And check back often because if you see one frog, you'll likely see many more.
