Wood Furniture with Howard Restor-A-Finish
We have begun spring cleaning and this includes restoring and waxing wood furniture. When searching for products, we go to the home improvement store with photographs of our finished wooden furniture to compare to the color charts.
On this hutch, I applied Howard Restor-A-Finish in Cherry. This product was also available in Neutral, Golden Oak,Maple-Pine, Mahogany, Walnut, Dark Walnut, Dark Oak, and Ebony Brown. If you have a lighter piece such as I did the product in Cherry darkened it a little.
To Restore
1.Apply the product to a cloth
2.Wipe on a small area at a time
3. Let it set and then wipe it off a few minutes later.
4. Move on to the next area and start the process over.
I had a small table I wanted to match the piece above and the tables finish was lighter so over a period of time I applied multiple coats of this color till both pieces color match.
I did find that Restor-A-Finish, helps blend out slight sun fade, minor nicks and scratches. On areas such as this, I applied the product to the select area with fine grade (000) steel wool and rubbed in lightly.
I would suggest to move across with the grain and look for signs of any pooling of product.
I would advise against letting the product set to long as you may end up with something undesirable such as a piece that is to dark and then you would have to start over with stripping and sanding the entire piece. And only use on wood that has already been finished.
My next step will be to apply wax to the surface.
To wax
1. wipe wooden furniture with a soft damp cloth
2. apply wax with a folded cotton rag
3. let product dry
4. clean with a cloth
