Crocks, Stoneware and Jugs
In showing Mom this photo I'd taken at an Antique Mall we'd stopped at earlier in the week, she said, " I bet those crocks were expensive. Those use to be the thing to live by."
I like most anything vintage and love crocks. Crocks are made from clay. They're fired in a kiln and given a salt glaze. Stoneware crocks were used to store everything. And my ancestors often used open crocks like the white one shown above for fermenting sauerkraut.
I use my favorite crocks outside as planters for impatiens. In the winter months, the crocks return inside where the are cleaned out and used as storage containers. I also have some crocks that hold kitchen towels while others hold rollng pins.
I use crocks like this pineapple crock we picked up at garage sale to hold cooking tongs.
Last year, I won a gift certificate in a raffle. And with the gift certifiate, I purchased this picture of stoneware. I enjoy this display and the flames on the candles are lit by a battery operated light
Nowadays, old crocks are highly collectible and are often available at estate sales or you may find a collection like the one above at your local antique mall.
If you have stoneware, crocks and jugs, what do you use them for?
