Pokagon State Park
When looking for a campsite, we often set out in search of a park within 2-3 hours from home that is dog friendly and in an attractive location. We feel Pokagon State Park, originally called Lake James State Park, is such a park.
We have been to this park many times over the past 30 years. The park is wooded with great nature
trails. The campground has clean facilities and the campsites have picnic tables, fire rings and they're fairly level. We set up camp and started off.
The park’s Potawatomi Inn, name for Native Americans, remains a popular resort and conference center and offers a beautiful view of the lake from the back deck area. We had a peaceful time on the lawn watching swans swimming in the lake.
The lake itself is a truly stunning.
Boating, swimming and fishing are popular activities there. And if you have a few hours to kill, you might wish to rent one of the paddle boats.
Pokagon also offers a saddle barn with bridal trail an excellent nature center.
The twin-track toboggan run is used weekends from the Friday after Thanksgiving through February.
We stopped to rest at the CCC Shelter. It was constructed in 1934/35 by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
After a calming stroll around the park, we ended up back at our relaxed campsite.
We'll definitely be returning. ( Fall Log)
