Weirs Rapids Maumee River

The sound of the rushing water of Weirs Rapids, the feel of the sun on my face, and the warm gentle breeze blowing through my hair made for a lovely day! This area of Maumee River is a popular fishing spot. It's shallow and the current is rapid. We spent time along the bank and searched the sky for the American Bald Eagles that we often see over the river.

We had this location to ourselves, on this gorgeous day and I enjoyed taking photos of the rapids and Woodcock and Indian Island which sits in the middle of the Maumee River.

I was mindful; that The Maumee river was known as the Miami. French colonists back in 1671 called the river Miami du Lac 'Miami of the Lake'. Maumee is an altered spelling of the Ottawa or Odawa name for the Miami tribe, Maamii. The Odawa had a village at the mouth of the Maumee River and moved into northern Ohio around 1740. They, like many other nations, surrendered their land in Ohio with the signing of the Treaty of Greenville (1795).
