Memories of Annie Oakley

We stopped to visit American sharpshooter Annie Oakley’s grave earlier this month. It wasn't my first visit but I lost track of some of our photos of it. Bullets are displayed on top of the grave and there are some on the ground around it. It appeared someone had recently placed sunflower there.

Annie Oakley starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Annie Oakley broke ground when she and her husband/ manager, Frank Butler, joined Buffalo Bill in 1885. Annie shot holes in playing cards that had been thrown in the air before they touched the ground. One of her most famous tricks was looking in a mirror to shoot distant targets behind her.

You can learn more about Oakley at the Garst Museum The National Annie Oakley Center

A mural of “Little Sure Shot”  remains on a Darke County barn though it is more weathered than this photo that was taken years ago. The barn is just south of North Star, Ohio along State Route 127.

The painting was completed by barn artist Scott Hagan and shows Oakley standing and aiming her rifle. Her quote, “Aim at a high mark and you’ll hit it.” is displayed.

You can find more images of Hagan's artistry under his Ohio History Connection Barns.
