Gene Stratton-Porter's Cabin at Wildflower Woods

This month we visited Gene Stratton-Porter’s Cabin at Wildflower Woods. The cabin rests on the shores of Sylvan Lake on 148 acres of fields, woods, and beautiful gardens. This is not my first time here. I like returning to the area to see how it changes over time.  Gene began construction on this home in 1913  and paid for it with her own finances. She felt she had more privacy here than in her home in Geneva.

Many people that read Gene's books know her as a well-known author and naturalist but she was also a great photographer and illustrator. In addition, she was one of the first women to form a movie studio and production company. She was truly gifted and she used the position she achieved to aid in the conservation of the Limberlost Swamp and other Indiana wetlands.

I can’t actually remember when I first came to love Gene Stratton Porter books but I know I began receiving them over 30 years ago. 

Her first novel was 1903’s The Song of the Cardinal, and  Michael O’Halloran, 1915, was the first book she wrote while residing here in Rome City
