Ouabache State Park, Bluffton Indiana
Ouabache State Park, nestled along the scenic Wabash River near Bluffton, Indiana, holds a special place in our hearts. We have been coming here for well over 50 years.
One of its most beautiful features is Kunkel Lake, especially in the fall when the colors come alive. The lake’s glassy surface creates stunning reflections, perfect for photography. It’s not uncommon to spot a quiet canoe drifting across the water, where bluegill and bass swim below the surface.
For my husband and me, the park’s charm is deeply tied to its historic 100-foot fire observation tower, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). We’re among the many who have climbed it—more than once—to take in the breathtaking panoramic views from the top.
Another highlight is the park’s bison exhibit. In one of our favorite memories, we shared a moment talking to a bison that had wandered close to the fence. The exhibit is thoughtfully maintained, with a well-kept feeding shed and space for these majestic animals to roam.
Whether it’s the peaceful lake, the awe-inspiring tower, or the quiet moments with wildlife, Ouabache has a way of drawing us back, again and again.
