American White Pelican

When I  think of birds that are striking I often think of the American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), weighing as much as 20 pounds.

They breed and nest in lakes and wetlands in the northern U.S. and we often spot them around here through November.

I admit I am compelled to sit and watch these amazingly beautiful creatures.
They are a sight to behold with their vivid black and white wings spanning nine feet or more. If I am lucky, I  see them land on the water or lift their bill out of the water with whatever fish might be in it.
