Pew Island Scenic Trail and Shorebirds

Pew Island Scenic Trail is accessible from the causeway. You can walk the gravel path alongside a marshy area. Here you'll often find ducks, herons, and egrets fishing.

We paused and photographed the shorebirds and watched a bearded guy cast out his line on the lake.

The scenic trail is beautiful! In the summer, we normally see a variety of butterflies attracted to the flora. Some of the rocky area along the trailhead was placed there for aesthetic purposes. Along your left, you will find areas where you can sit and enjoy the view. The trail is inundated with a heavy collection of cattails and swamp plants.

I adore poetry and Robert Frost's poem The Road Not Taken comes to mind when we hike here as we often elect to veer off the loop and take a path that crosses between the trees to the opposite side of the island.

Today, was an enjoyable journey as it led us between some of the largest trees on the island. As we neared the middle there was clearing and the sunlight filtered through the trees brilliantly. Crossing out on the other side there is a decent breeze and some fantastic view of the lake. We eventually made our way back to the inland.

Even though much of the habitat of Pew Island is dense, there are areas that offer a beautiful view of Indian Lake from the trail.

If you heard about the trail it’s likely a birder told you. This island is a special place. as It affords us the opportunity to view a variety of bird species. This area has some attractive water lilies and is an excellent habitat for bird watching.

Along the path, we came to an area with an old dead tree and looked up and there was a Heron resting on a small branch. We stopped and photographed it.

We walked back towards our vehicle with plans to return to this peaceful location.
