Battle of Fort Recovery, Fort Recovery, Ohio

The Battle of Fort Recovery was a battle of the Northwest Indian War. It took place at the village of Fort Recovery, June 30 – July 1, 1794.

After St Clair's defeat in 1791, Mad Anthony Wayne was appointed by President Washington to succeed St. Clair as the Commander-in-Chief of the army. On June 30, 1794, a combined Native American Army commanded by Little Turtle of the Miamis and Blue Jacket of the Shawnees, attacked the fort. The structure of the fort gave the soldiers the protection they needed. After two days of battle, the Indian Confederation gave up their assault. The battles at Fort Recovery prepared the conditions for the 1795 Treaty of Greenville. After the treaty, the American Indians relinquished most of their Ohio landhold. The Fort Recovery State Museum houses information about Native American Indianas and that time period. The wooden statue of Red-Haired Nance is in honor of an 18th-century woman who while holding her infant used a frying pan to fight off American Indians.
