Independence Dam State Park, Defiance County Ohio
As part of my recent adventures exploring Northwest Ohio’s parks, I made a return visit to Independence Dam State Park, located in Defiance County October 17, 2025 and let me tell you, it’s especially stunning in the fall.
Nestled along the Maumee River, just a few miles east of the city of Defiance, Independence Dam is a peaceful and scenic spot that really comes alive this time of year. The park stretches for over five miles along the riverbank, and during autumn, the entire area transforms into a colorful corridor of reds, golds, and oranges. The reflection of the foliage in the water is absolutely beautiful—like something straight out of a painting.
One of the highlights of the park is the dam itself, which creates a wide, slow-moving section of the river that's perfect for fishing, kayaking, or just relaxing by the water. The sound of the water flowing over the dam mixed with the rustling leaves makes for a pretty calming backdrop.
There’s also a scenic towpath trail that follows the old Miami and Erie Canal route. It’s great for walking or biking, and in the fall, it’s lined with towering trees in full color. You can spot all kinds of wildlife, from deer to migrating birds.
The park is less crowded in the fall, which means you get a more peaceful experience. There are still picnic areas, shelters, and spots to sit and enjoy the views, and you’ll probably run into a few other folks doing the same.
