Litzenberg Memorial Woods, Findlay Ohio

We’ve visited Litzenberg Memorial Woods many times over the years, and on several occasions, we’ve brought our dogs along to enjoy the peaceful trails and natural beauty. The park holds a unique charm, not just because of its landscapes but also due to its historical roots. It’s situated just beyond the homestead of early settlers Charles and Mary McKinnis, who arrived in the area around 1822. Their legacy is preserved in the 1847 McKinnis House, a beautifully maintained pioneer-era home. The site also features a period-accurate garden and several outbuildings, offering visitors a glimpse into 19th-century homesteading life. One of the reasons we keep returning is the variety of trails that wind through the woods. There’s a bit of something for everyone. We especially enjoy walking these paths in the fall, when the tall trees blaze with color and the terrain offers scenic views of ravines, rolling hills, and forest canopies. On this particular October day, I had some camera issues but wanted to document our time, not knowing when we'd make it here again. So, we started our walk by heading up toward the area near the Activity Barn. There’s a picnic shelter, playground, restrooms, and parking along this route. We retraced our steps and picked up the Meadow Trail, which eventually connected us to the Back Woods Trail. My husband was initially unsure whether I’d be able to manage the Back Woods Trail, since I was wearing sandals. I admit this is not ideal footwear. But I managed. That said, the trail does have some tricky sections. It's known for its exposed roots that snake across the path, making footing a bit challenging in places.
