Handed Down in Bloom China painting—or Porcelain painting

 

China painting—or porcelain painting—is a meticulous craft involving hand-decorating glazed porcelain using mineral-based overglaze enamels. After the initial firing, artists apply delicate layers of color and fire the piece again at lower temperatures (approximately 700–850°C), permanently fusing luminous pigments into the glaze. The result is richly detailed imagery—florals, landscapes, portraits—that resemble fine paintings in miniature form.

This historic technique provides a meaningful backdrop to Handed Down in Bloom. And I was fortunate to attend this exquisite legacy showcase of Irene Robenalt’s work, which resonates deeply with the tradition of heirloom craftsmanship and generational artistry.
